Thermocline and Zonal Advective Feedbacks Within the Equatorial Ocean Recharge Oscillator Model for ENSO

چکیده
Through the dynamical coupling between ocean and atmosphere, the vertical advection of anomalous subsurface temperature by the mean upwelling and the zonal advection of mean sea surface temperature (SST) by anomalous current constitute the so-called the thermocline and zonal advective feedbacks that are essential for El Nifio / Southern Oscillation (ENSO) coupled dynamics. In this paper, we demonstrate that these two feedbacks are dynamically linked because of the geostrophic balance between the upper ocean zonal current and the meridional gradient of the thermocline. Both feedbacks thus play important and similar roles in the growth and phase transition of ENSO. We further propose a new version of the conceptual recharge oscillator model for ENSO by including these two feedbacks. The new model retains the simplest possible form of a harmonic oscillator, yet presents a more complete description of slow physics for ENSO. Moreover, it also provides the reconciliation between the biased emphases in the ENSO theories on the thermocline and zonal advective

Collective Role of Thermocline and Zonal Advective Feedbacks in the ENSO Mode*
The vertical advection of anomalous subsurface temperature by the mean upwelling and the zonal advection of mean sea surface temperature (SST) by anomalous current are known to be essential for the equatorial SST anomaly associated with the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). In the coupled model, these two processes are referred to as the thermocline feedback and the zonal advective feedback,...
متن کاملOn the ENSO Mechanisms
The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is an interannual phenomenon involved the tropical Pacific Ocean-atmosphere interactions. The oscillatory nature of ENSO requires both positive and negative ocean-atmosphere feedbacks. The positive feedback is dated back to Bjerknes' hypothesis in the 1960s, and different negative feedbacks have been proposed since the 1980s associated with the delayed os...
متن کاملAn Equatorial Ocean Recharge Paradigm for ENSO. Part I: Conceptual Model
A new conceptual model for ENSO has been constructed based upon the positive feedback of tropical ocean– atmosphere interaction proposed by Bjerknes as the growth mechanism and the recharge–discharge of the equatorial heat content as the phase-transition mechanism suggested by Cane and Zebiak and by Wyrtki. This model combines SST dynamics and ocean adjustment dynamics into a coupled basinwide ...

The recharge oscillator paradigm for ENSO is further investigated by using a simple coupled model, which externally includes the equatorial wave dynamics represented by the Kelvin and gravest symmetric Rossby waves. To investigate the role of eddies in the Pacific basin–wide adjustment to the wind forcing, particularly at the western and eastern boundaries, the zonal mean and eddy parts are tre...
متن کاملA Simple Model for the Pacific Cold Tongue and ENSO*
A conceptual model is constructed based upon the Bjerknes hypothesis of tropical atmosphere–ocean interaction. It is shown that strong feedbacks among the trade winds, equatorial zonal sea surface temperature contrast, and upper-ocean heat content occur in the tropical Pacific basin. Coupled atmosphere–ocean dynamics produce both the strong Pacific cold-tongue climate state and the El Niño–Sout...
